DC Electricity Principles, Practice, and Applications

Note: This is a recorded video presentation and does not qualify as a live interactive course.

Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH video presentation presents principles, practices and applications of direct current (DC) electricity in a simple, easy understand, format.

The course uses simple analogies and practical, day to day, examples to illustrate the, otherwise, abstract concepts of DC electricity. Participants will be able to perform straightforward and common calculations, in the DC realm, associated with voltage, current, resistance, circuit analysis, power, service factor, and much more. Practical examples of DC electrical equipment applications, in industrial, and institutional settings are covered. This includes discussion on DC power transmission systems, solar PV systems, EV’s (Electric Vehicles), LED’s, DC ESS (Energy Storage Systems), HESS, DC-DC converters, DC mining dragline equipment, Diesel locomotives, etc. Applications of electronic DC safety devices are explained and illustrated. A few DC articles in the National Electrical Code are introduced.

This 4 PDH video presentation is designed for engineers, professional engineers, energy professionals, engineering managers, technical professionals, facilities managers and other professionals who are not intimately familiar with DC principles, practices and applications.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education video presentation is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding the principles and concepts associated with DC electricity.
  • Learning about the distinction between DC and AC electricity to apply appropriate mathematics and physics premised techniques, principles, and equations for analyzing DC systems, in electronics and electrical power domains.
  • Familiarizing with DC-based electrical energy production (PV) and energy storage systems, i.e. batteries and supercapacitors.
  • Learning about DC technologies and equipment and gaining appreciation of how ubiquitous and indispensable DC is in our personal and professional lives.
  • Familiarizing with DC power distribution equipment and instrumentation.
  • Learning about the role that the NEC and NFPA 70E play in the realm of DC electrical design, safety and arc flash hazard.
  • Learning about how to interpret DC electrical one-line and control diagrams.
