The Chernobyl Nuclear Plant Explosion
This online engineering PDH interactive presentation provides a brief outline on the nuclear plant explosion at Chernobyl, Ukraine, and its chronic fatal effects.
On April 26, 1986, a sudden surge of power during a reactor systems test destroyed Unit 4 of the nuclear power station at Chernobyl, Ukraine, in the former Soviet Union. The accident and the fire that followed released massive amounts of radioactive material into the environment. After the accident, officials closed off the area within 30 kilometers (18 miles) of the plant and evacuated about 115,000 people from the most heavily contaminated areas in 1986, and another 220,000 people in subsequent years. Today, a protective shelter covers the fallen reactor to prevent radiation from leaking.
This presentation introduces the design of the Chernobyl nuclear plant and describes the investigations of the primary reasons that led to its explosion. It further discusses the fatal effects of the explosion, including chronic health issues due to the still-present radioactive matter in the atmosphere, that affect thriving human, vegetative, and wildlife populations. Finally, this presentation describes the lessons learnt following the disaster and its ongoing legacy.
