Foundation Reuse for Highway Bridges – Part II
This online engineering PDH interactive presentation provides a brief evaluation of the integrity, durability and load carrying capacity issues of an existing bridge foundation being considered for reuse.
Given the high percentage of deteriorated or obsolete bridges in the national bridge inventory, the reuse of bridge foundations may be a viable option that can present a significant cost savings in bridge replacement and rehabilitation efforts. The potential time savings associated with foundation reuse can, in turn, reduce mobility impacts and increase the economic viability and sustainability of a project.
However, existing foundations may have uncertain material properties, geometry, or details that impact the risks associated with reuse. Assessment of these issues as well as foundation strengthening and repair measures and innovative approaches to optimize loading are discussed in this presentation.
This 4 PDH online interactive presentation is applicable to engineers, city planners, and owner agencies who are interested in foundation design with consideration for reuse.
This continuing education interactive presentation is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Understanding the durability and service life prior to foundation reuse
- Performing capacity assessment of foundations to be reused
- Familiarizing with decision making tools for foundation reuse
- Learning about foundation enhancement through the use of innovative materials
- Understanding the design of new foundations through monitoring and documentation
Once you finish watching the PDH interactive presentation, you will be redirected to your account to take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions to earn 4 PDH credits. The quiz will be based on this interactive presentation.
