Courses in this Package
Design and Construction of Earth and Rock-Fill Dams (G07-001)
Removal of Small Dams (G05-006)
This online engineering PDH course presents the fundamental principles underlying the design, construction, performance monitoring and modifications of earth and rock-fill dams. The design and construction of earth and rock-fill dams are complex because of the nature of the varying foundation conditions and range of properties of the materials available for use in the embankment.
The successful design, construction, and operation of a reservoir project over the full range of loading require a comprehensive site characterization, a detailed design of each feature, construction supervision, measurement and monitoring of the performance, and the continuous evaluation of the project features during operation.
This 7 PDH online course is applicable to geotechnical and structural engineers, geologists, design and construction personnel who are involved with the design and construction of earth and rock-fill dams.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Geological and subsurface explorations
- General design considerations and performance parameters
- Foundation and abutment preparation
- Seepage control methods
- Design of embankments and appurtenant structures
- General construction considerations
- Types of instrumentation
In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the US Corps of Engineers Publication EM 1110-2-2300, "General Design and Construction Considerations for Earth and Rock-Fill Dams".
Upon successful completion of the quiz, print your Certificate of Completion instantly. (Note: if you are paying by check or money order, you will be able to print it after we receive your payment.) For your convenience, we will also email it to you. Please note that you can log in to your account at any time to access and print your Certificate of Completion.
This online engineering PDH course will introduce you to the principles and practices of small dam removal. While it contains information specific to Oregon policies and regulations, the general concepts can be applied to small dam removal in other parts of the US and Canada.
It is estimated by FEMA that there are over 75,000 dams in the United States. Most of those are small dams and many of them are approaching or have exceeded their design life. As dams constructed in the “Heydays” of dam construction during the 1950’s and 60’s reach their expected end of design lives, removal of small dams will become a growing issue. While, the life of a dam can be extended with proper inspection and maintenance, they will eventually reach the end of their useful lives and become candidates for removal.
This 5 PDH online course is intended for all geotechnical, structural and civil engineers as well as design professionals and construction personnel interested in learning about the removal of small dams.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Ability to develop organizational support for dam removal candidates
- Ability to develop public outreach strategies
- Conducting successful technical team meetings
- Learning how to review site background data
- Knowing how to identify data gaps
- Knowing how to develop project goals and objectives
- Learning how to prepare a funding strategy
- Understanding the examples of project phasing
- Understanding the process of selecting an engineering firm
- Adopting the methods for recruiting reputable project engineers
- Familiarizing with regulatory agencies and their permitting process
- Conducting site monitoring during dam removal
- Understanding the basic concepts of site restoration
In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the document titled, “Removal of Small Dams” which is based on the publication “Removal of Small Dams in Oregon, A Guide for Project Managers”. It is used with permission of the author, Denise Hoffert, who authored the publication for the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board.
Once you complete your course review, you need to take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty five (25) questions to earn 5 PDH credits. The quiz will be based on the entire document.
