COURSE TITLE: OSHA Construction, Demolition, and Cleanup Safety Issues
COURSE NO: C04-025
OSHA Construction, Demolition, and Cleanup Safety Issues
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides an introduction to the OSHA rules that cover common situations, for example, fall prevention, scaffold safety, worker safety in trench work, asbestos and lead exposure, electrical hazards, respirator use, and nail gun use. The course is based on twenty-four OSHA Quick Cards and Fact Sheets (http://www.osha.gov/pls/publications/publication.html) related to hazards associated with construction, demolition, and cleanup. As a result, the course material is concise, easy to read, and easy to remember.

Construction, demolition, and cleanup projects are inherently hazardous. Accident rates in these industries are accordingly higher than in other industries. OSHA's mission is to reduce these accident rates through safety rules and regulations.

This 4 PDH online course is intended primarily for all engineers, design professionals, construction professionals and others who are involved with construction, demolition and cleanup projects.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding the safety requirements for scaffolds, trench excavation, and trench-worker protection
  • Understanding the principles of demolition safety and cleanup

COURSE TITLE: OSHA Fatal Facts: Fatalities Caused by Improper Work Practices
COURSE NO: C04-026
OSHA Fatal Facts: Fatalities Caused by Improper Work Practices
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course focuses on thirty of the accident summaries, selected to provide exposure to a wide variety of accident types. The accident summaries are supplemented by background information about industrial accidents in general and the construction industry in particular.  In addition, the lessons distilled from the accident summaries are used to formulate three common-sense principles of accident prevention.

In the United States, about 4,500 workers die each year in accidents on the job. Many of these accidents are the result of a failure to follow proper work practices. In an effort to increase awareness of this situation, OSHA maintains on its website a collection of "Fatal Facts" which are summaries of accidents in which one or more workers died because of improper work practices. These summaries often make for gripping reading because they show repeatedly how simple mistakes can lead to tragic deaths.

This 4 PDH online course is intended primarily for all engineers, designers, contractors, construction personnel and other who are responsible for employee safety and OSHA compliance in potentially hazardous occupations.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Knowing the principles of accident prevention
  • Learning about OSHA's accident prevention recommendations for falls, asphyxiation, nail guns, trenches, electrocution and working near machinery
  • Understanding the importance of worker training, both in competence in operating equipment and in awareness of hazards existing on a particular job site
  • Understanding the importance of supervision and enforcement of proper work practices
  • Familiarizing with OSHA's resources available for helping employers reduce hazards occurring in particular situations
  • Familiarizing with the extent and types of work-related accidents occurring in the United States
  • Learning about OSHA's most frequently cited violations
  • Understanding the disproportionate role played by falls in the fatal accidents totals
  • Understanding the significance of having a designated competent person present on the site
  • Learning about the Fatal Four leading causes of construction accidents
  • Familiarizing with the tremendous variety of work-place accidents that can lead to serious injury or death
Course Document

In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the course document titled, "OSHA Fatal Facts: Fatalities Caused by Improper Work Practices", by Mark Rossow, which uses some of the accident summaries from OSHA's website.

COURSE PROVIDER: Elie Tawil, P.E., LEED AP
Personal Protective Equipment
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course addesses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) types, selection and training, as well as conducting a hazard assessment of the workplace.

Hazards exist in every workplace in many different scenarios: sharp edges, falling objects, flying sparks, chemicals, noise and a myriad of other potentially dangerous situations. Controlling a hazard at its source is the best way to protect employees. Depending on the hazard or workplace conditions, OSHA recommends the use of engineering or work practice controls to manage or eliminate hazards to the greatest extent possible. Therefore, OSHA developed the Personal Protection Equipment Standard to protect employees from workplace hazards that can cause injury.

This 3 PDH online course is applicable to all engineers, employers, building owners, facility managers, and all personnel working on construction projects.

COURSE TITLE: A Guide to the Big Four Safety Hazards in Industry
COURSE NO: C01-016
COURSE PROVIDER: Allen Hughes, P.E.
A Guide to the Big Four Safety Hazards in Industry
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides an introduction to the proper approach to assessing the workplace environment for hazards and their remedies. It presents the most important recommendations and how to apply them to the situation at hand. Through the completion of this course, an employer or manager can determine what actions are necessary to reduce the risk of employee exposure to these hazards.

There are four main hazards associated with industrial work: fall, electrical, struck-by, and caught-in. These hazards are known to cause injuries and fatalities in the workplace. It is important to train managers and employees on how to identify, avoid, and remedy these risks in the workplace. When employees are trained for these hazards, the potential for injuries, fatalities and the liability to the employer are all decreased.

This 1 PDH online course is applicable to engineers, designers, contractors, construction workers and other professionals interested in understanding the four main hazards that may appear in the workplace and how to better prepare to identify and correct those hazards.
