Steel Bridges: Selecting the Right Bridge Type
This online engineering PDH course provides practical information on selecting the right steel bridge type in terms of span, economy and constructability.
One of the initial choices to be made by the bridge designer is to select the most appropriate bridge type for the site. While this choice is not always straightforward, selecting the right structure type is probably the important aspect of designing a cost effective bridge. This particular module provides bridge designers with the tools to select the right bridge type for the given site. Bridge types discussed include rolled steel beam, steel plate girder, trusses, arches, cable-stayed, and suspension bridges.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Understanding the required span lengths for steel bridges
- Familiarizing with the existing and site constraints for selecting the right type of bridge
- Learning about the different bridge types such as rolled beam bridges, welded plate girders, trusses, arches, etc.
- Knowing the cost-effectiveness of the type of bridges with respect to the spans
- Identifying the differences in construction between bridge types
