Seismic Design and Construction of Dwellings and Townhouses According to the International Residential Code (IRC-2024a)

COURSE NO: S08-007
PDH CREDIT: 8
Seismic Design and Construction of Dwellings and Townhouses According to the International Residential Code (IRC-2024a)
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides a comprehensive overview of seismic design of dwellings and townhouses based on IRC code.

This course presents the design and the construction provisions important to the earthquake performance of one- and two-family detached dwellings and townhouses constructed under the International Residential Code (IRC) (ICC, 2024a). This course is designed to be an important guide for structural engineers working in this field. This course covers the fundamental concepts such as load paths, which explain how earthquake forces travel through building components to the foundation and supporting soils. It explores the role of key structural systems, including roof-ceiling systems, floor systems, and wall bracing, as well as the importance of connections between these systems. Special focus is given to foundation design, soil conditions, and addressing irregular building configurations that can affect seismic performance.

This 8 PDH online course is applicable to structural and civil engineers and others interested in learning about seismic design of dwellings and townhouses.
Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding seismic design fundamentals for dwellings and townhouses based on IRC standards
  • Explaining how earthquake forces transfer through various building components to the foundation
  • Identifying critical connections between roof-ceiling systems, floor systems, and wall bracing
  • Understanding the role of roof-ceiling systems, floor sheathing, and blocking in earthquake resistance
  • Familiarizing with the seismic role of wood light-frame walls, cripple wall bracing, and alternative braced wall panels
  • Understanding the role of foundations, footings, and stem walls in seismic performance
  • Explaining how building shape, horizontal and vertical irregularities, and story stiffness affect seismic performance
  • Learning about the methods for retrofitting dwellings, foundations, and masonry chimneys to improve earthquake resilience
  • Exploring the use of wood, concrete, masonry, and steel, and their reinforcement, sheathing, and anchorage requirements in seismic design
