Coalbed Methane Operations

COURSE NO: P02-007

Coalbed Methane Operations
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course provides information on the development and operation of coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs.

In 1980, the U.S. Congress passed the legislation that came to be known as the “Section 29 Tax Credit for Unconventional Fuels” that was the facilitating event for worldwide development of natural gas production from coal beds called Coalbed Methane in the U.S.  Prior to this legislation, the Oil & Gas Industry knew the location of significant gas in coal fields but lacked the technology to exploit it. All of these things that we did not know were going to be expensive to learn and gas prices were low enough that the industry did not anticipate an adequate risk/reward balance. Without the Section 29 tax credits it is unlikely that the technology and knowledge required to make any of the CBM/CSG fields in the world viable.

This online engineering PDH course reviews field experience concerning the development and operation of coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs from the point of view of processes that have worked and processes that are common and where those two mindsets diverge.  It deals with the unique method of gas storage in coalbed reservoirs, the relationship between reservoir pressure and free gas, and an approach to determine when energy can most effectively be added to improve the recovery process.

This 2 PDH online course is applicable to petroleum engineers who are interested in learning about the development and operation of coalbed methane reservoirs.
Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Learning about the differences between a pore-volume-storage reservoir and an adsorption reservoir
  • Familiarizing with the special completion considerations for coalbed methane (CBM)
  • Understanding the role of downhole pressure in managing desorption
  • Gaining a general overview on the CBM life cycle
  • Exploring the role of surface facilities in reservoir management

Course Quiz
Once you complete your course review, you need to take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of ten (10) questions to earn 2 PDH credits. The quiz will be based on the entire document.
The minimum passing score is 70%. There is no time limit on the quiz, and you can take it multiple times until you pass at no additional cost.
Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of the quiz, print your Certificate of Completion instantly. (Note: if you are paying by check or money order, you will be able to print it after we receive your payment.) For your convenience, we will also email it to you. Please note that you can log in to your account at any time to access and print your Certificate of Completion.
