Use of Freeway Shoulders For Travel
This online engineering PDH course provides an understanding of the use of freeway shoulders for travel.
Part-time shoulder use is a transportation system management and operation (TSM&O) strategy that allows use of the left or right shoulders as travel lanes during some, but not all, hours of the day. It is a strategy for addressing congestion and reliability issues within the transportation system and can be particularly cost-effective where alternatives to add lanes are infeasible, undesirable, or cost prohibitive. The purpose of this guide is to provide guidance for planning, designing, implementing, and operating part-time shoulder use.
This 12 PDH online course is applicable to transportation engineers, toll agency personnel, Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) planners and designers who are interested in learning more about the use of freeway shoulders for travel.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Learning about the Performance-Based Practical Design (PBPD) process
- Understanding the impacts and feasibility of implementing part-time shoulder use
- Designing and operating part-time shoulder use to optimize safety and lane utilization
- Learning about the environmental impacts of part-time shoulder use, including air quality and noise
- Understanding the benefit-cost analysis and computing the lifecycle costs of part-time shoulder use
- Learning about the various design considerations for part-time shoulder use, including geometry, pavement, drainage, signing and marking, and ITS design
