Roadway Horizontal Alignment
This online engineering PDH course focuses on the geometric design of horizontal alignments for modern roads and highways. In today's environment, designers must do more than apply design standards and criteria to "solve" a problem. They must understand how various roadway elements contribute to safety and facility operation, including the horizontal alignment.
The roadway horizontal alignment is a series of horizontal tangents (straight roadway sections), circular curves, and spiral transitions. It shows the proposed roadway location in relation to the existing terrain and adjacent land conditions. Together with the vertical alignment (grades and vertical curves) and roadway cross-sections (lanes, shoulders, curbs, medians, roadside slopes, ditches and sidewalks), the horizontal alignment (tangents and curves) helps to provide a three-dimensional roadway layout.
This 4 PDH online course is applicable to traffic or transportation engineers interested in learning about the principles to be considered when selecting and designing roadway horizontal alignments. The contents of this document are intended to serve as guidance and not as an absolute standard or rule.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Learning about sight distance
- Stopping
- Decision
- Passing
- Intersection
- Understanding design considerations
- Cross slopes
- Radii
- Grades
- Learning about horizontal curves
- Compound
- Spiral
- Coordinating Horizontal & Vertical Curves
In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the course document titled "Roadway Horizontal Alignments". This course document is based exclusively on Chapter 3 (Section 3.3 Horizontal Alignment) of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) publication, "A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets" (also known as the "Green Book").
Once you complete your course review, you need to take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty five (25) questions to earn 4 PDH credits. The quiz will be based on Chapter 3 of this AASHTO publication.
Upon successful completion of the quiz, print your Certificate of Completion instantly. (Note: if you are paying by check or money order, you will be able to print it after we receive your payment.) For your convenience, we will also email it to you. Please note that you can log in to your account at any time to access and print your Certificate of Completion.
