Geometric roadway design consists of three main parts: cross section (lanes and shoulders, curbs, medians, roadside slopes and ditches, sidewalks); horizontal alignment (tangents and curves); and vertical alignment (grades and vertical curves). Combined, these elements provide a three-dimensional layout for a roadway.
