Reactor Nuclear Parameters
This online engineering PDH course presents specific parameters of a nuclear reactor including the neutron life cycle, reactivity and reactivity coefficients, neutron poisons, and control rods:
- Neutron Life Cycle is the series of steps that fission neutrons go through as they slow to thermal energies and are absorbed in the reactor.
- Reactivity is a measure of the departure of a reactor from criticality. Reactivity coefficients are useful in quantifying the reactivity change that will occur due to the change in a physical property such as the temperature of the moderator or fuel.
- Neutron Poisons are absorbing materials intentionally designed into the reactor for specific purposes including remove neutrons from the reactor.
- Control Rods are made of neutron absorbing materials and used to adjust the reactivity of the core.
This 4 PDH online course is applicable to industrial and nuclear engineers, construction and design personnel, technical staff and facility operators who are interested in gaining a better understanding of the nuclear parameters of a rector.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Understanding the neutron life cycle
- Knowing reactivity and reactivity coefficients
- Learning about neutron poisons, xenon, samarium and other fission product poisons
- Understanding the function of control rods
In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review Module 3, “Reactor Theory (Nuclear Parameters)” of the Department of Energy Publication DOE-HDBK-1019/2-93, “Nuclear Physics and Reactor Theory”.
