Protecting Building Utility Systems from Flood Damage
This online engineering PDH course provides information on building codes that regulate the design and construction of structures in flood-prone areas and on flood hazards and mitigation measures for residential and non-residential buildings.
During the past 30 years, flooding in the US has resulted in annual loss of 8 billion dollars and 82 fatalities. With the recent change in climate conditions, the risk of floods to coastal areas and interior flood-prone areas has increased. Flood damage can be critical to the building mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems, etc. There are various approaches to protect building utilities from flood damage.
The design and construction of utility systems that comply with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) requirements for construction of new residential and non-residential structures in flood-prone areas are explained in this course. Even if compliance is not required, the application of mitigation measures reduces the future flood damage and facilitates the recovery after flooding.
This 12 PDH online course is applicable to civil engineers and professionals who are interested in designing and constructing residential and non-residential structures in flood-prone areas.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Familiarizing with the regulated flood hazard areas, risk assessment and risk reduction
- Understanding flood hazard characteristics and flood loads
- Gaining a general overview on NFIP flood insurance considerations
- Learning how to achieve NFIP compliance for new construction, substantial improvement, and substantial damage
- Understanding non-compliant NFIP existing structures, no substantial improvement, and no substantial damage
- Familiarizing with regulatory framework including NFIP regulations for building systems/utilities, and building codes
- Learning the suitable mitigation methods for residential and non-residential structures
- Identifying the flood risks to HVAC, electrical systems, plumbing systems, fuel systems, and elevators
