Offshore Wind Energy Strategies

COURSE NO: R06-005
PDH CREDIT: 6
Offshore Wind Energy Strategies
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course establishes strategies to maximize the effectiveness, reliability, and sustainability of offshore wind energy in the United States.

Offshore wind has the potential to supply America with large amounts of clean energy to meet America’s power needs while also increasing U.S. jobs on the market and help with the climate crisis. Further, offshore wind power plants can provide reliable and increasingly affordable renewable power near coastal energy load centers where there is a scarcity of sites for large-scale renewable energy development on land. For these reasons, many states have adopted proactive offshore wind energy policies to capture the benefits of economic growth, energy independence, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

In this course the five strategies to make the United States a global leader in the industry are identified: expand federal incentives, reduce offshore wind energy costs, improve siting and regulatory processes, invest in the supply chain, and plan grid integration.

This 6 PDH online course is applicable to energy systems engineers and professionals who are interested in learning more about renewable energy and wind energy technology.
Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Familiarizing with the amount of offshore wind energy currently being generated and the reasonable future expectations in the next thirty years
  • Understanding the advantage of being able to site offshore wind energy projects relatively close to large cities
  • Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of offshore wind generation compared to onshore generation
  • Understanding how federal tax incentives can be used to expand wind energy generation
  • Understanding how siting and regulatory processes can be improved
  • Characterizing the role of grid integration with offshore wind energy generation
  • Knowing how features of wind-energy projects will vary in different regions such as the Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, and Great Lakes
  • Identifying how offshore wind energy could contribute to economy wide de-carbonization by producing hydrogen for use as a zero-carbon transportation fuel
Course Document
In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the course document titled, “Offshore Wind Energy Strategies”, which is based on the U.S. Department of Energy document Offshore Wind Energy Strategies: Regional and national strategies to accelerate and maximize the effectiveness, reliability, and sustainability of U.S. offshore wind energy deployment and operation, publication No. Washington, DC, 20585, dated January 2022.
