Mechanical Power Transmission Fundamentals
This online engineering PDH course takes out some of the complication by breaking it down into its various elements and dealing with them separately. It describes gear trains, planetary gear sets, differential gears, and gearboxes and their use in the industrial and automotive fields. Next, couplings and clutches are discussed with reference to their use in automotive torque converters. Finally, a short description of belts and chains is given including when they should be used in lieu of gears.
Mechanical Power Transmission (MPT) is a very dynamic field of endeavor. It may be the chain on a bicycle, the gearbox on a wind turbine, or the drive train of an automobile. The chain on a bicycle transfers human energy into the kinetic energy a moving bicycle has; the gearbox on a wind turbine transfers wind energy into electrical energy; and the drive train of an automobile transfers chemical energy (gasoline powered vehicles) also into kinetic energy. The field is not without its challenges. Designers are finding that the gearbox on wind turbines is more of a problem than anticipated because of premature failure. New government regulations over fuel economy, exhaust emissions, and vehicle safety are pushing the state of the art of automobile design even higher. New ideas and concepts are continually being investigated.
This 3 PDH online course is intended for mechanical engineers, automotive engineers, design engineers, and any other professional interested in gaining a better understanding in mechanical power transmission.
