Freeze-Thaw Resistance of Concrete with Marginal Air Content
This online engineering PDH course describes a laboratory investigation of the behavior of concrete with "marginal" air void systems, in which the air content and other air void system parameters do not consistently meet commonly accepted thresholds for freeze-thaw durability.
The air content of concrete is a factor in the concrete's durability that may also affect the service life of concrete beams, concrete pavement, etc. During the freeze-thaw cycle the air voids in concrete expand and contract. This physical cycle may lead to microcracking in the concrete. It is recommended that the air void system of concrete contain approximately 6 percent total air and a spacing factor less than 0.20 millimeters. It was observed however in laboratory studies that some concretes exhibited good freeze-thaw resistance with an air content and spacing factor outside of the accepted thresholds.
This 3 PDH online course is applicable to civil, geotechnical, transportation and environmental engineers, as well as all other professionals involved in the planning and construction of both concrete pavements and structures built in climates with below-freezing temperatures. This course will also be of interest to concrete researchers studying the factors affecting concrete durability.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
-
Ability to compare the performance of Vinsol resin and synthetic air-entraining admixtures
-
Understanding the difference between entrapped air and entrained air
-
Learning about the effects of microcracks in concrete
-
Learning about freezing temperature of water in concrete gel
-
Learning about the effects of air voids on the freeze-thaw cycles in concrete
In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the Federal Highway Administration Publication FHWA-HRT-06-117, "Freeze-Thaw Resistance of Concrete with Marginal Air Content", published December 2006.
