Advanced Boolean Logic and Applications to Control Systems
This online engineering PDH course builds upon basic concepts and assumes some knowledge of Boolean operators. It presents advanced concepts such as synthesis of equations using truth tables, min terms, and Karnaugh maps; and writing equations in the Sum of Products Form. It also covers the Binary number system and methods to convert numbers between the binary and decimal systems. It also briefly reviews the simplification of equations using familiar algebraic techniques, and identities unique to Boolean algebra.
Boolean variables and equations are used extensively with digital systems to determine an outcome based on an occurrence of events. For example, inputs which represent a system's normal and/or abnormal operating conditions can be combined in an equation to determine if equipment needs to be automatically started or stopped, if an operator needs to be alerted to the conditions, or if some other action needs to be taken.
This 2 PDH online course is applicable to engineers working with control systems, such as programmable logic controllers, or other digital systems, and who must program these systems. It is also applicable to those engineers who must write or review specifications for the automatic control of equipment.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Simplifying Boolean equations using DeMorgan's Theorem, Boolean identities, and Boolean algebraic properties
- Generating Boolean equations in the Standard Sum of Products Form using truth tables and min terms
- Generating Boolean equations in the Simplified Standard Sum of Products Form using Karnaugh Maps
- Converting decimal numbers from and to binary numbers
- Generating of Boolean equations from written system specifications
In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the course document titled, "Advanced Boolean Logic and Applications to Control Systems".
